Volunteer Opportunities at the Museum
The Twin Falls County Historical Society Museum has a variety of volunteer projects to fit your interests. Come by the Museum anytime during open hours, Tuesday-Saturday, 12:00-5:00 pm, to fill out an application and learn how to get started!
Volunteer jobs are available on a monthly, weekly, seasonal, and as-needed basis.
Research is vital to all museums! It is used to make signage, create displays, write articles, and flesh out our catalog records. Not sure where to start looking for information? We will teach you how to use our resources to find what you need. Your research can be done at the museum or from home.
Cleaning
Yard Work
Is outside your favorite place to be?
The museum grounds are mostly maintained by the county parks and waterways crew, but occasionally, we need a little extra help. This job would include raking and debris clean-up, watering and care of plants, trimming, etc. This job will be seasonal as needed. Bonus! You can take home any “pet” rockchucks you find 😉. Seasonal.
Writing
Are you a budding author always on the brink of finally writing that novel? Keep your writing skills sharp by contributing to the museum’s monthly newsletter! We are always looking for historical stories and are open to adding recurring articles or sections to our newsletter. You will work with the editor to create your masterpieces. Monthly, as needed.
Books
Are you an avid reader, always on the hunt for another good history book? We are looking for a volunteer to come out once or twice a month to keep track of the Museum’s book inventory, suggest new books to stock, ensure all books are price-marked, and let the administrator know when books need to be reordered. Monthly, as needed.
Docents
Occasionally, we need someone to watch over the main museum building while the administrator works elsewhere. Your responsibilities would include greeting visitors, answering questions, and taking phone messages. If interested, we can also teach you how to demonstrate certain items for visitors. We will provide an orientation to teach you what you need to know. As needed.
Lecture Series Co-Ordinator
The Museum’s lecture series typically runs from September to October and January to March/April. This volunteer would be responsible for finding and contacting speakers on various topics of interest and working with the administrator to schedule and advertise the lectures. Seasonal.
Tour Guides
This job is not as scary as it sounds!
The museum offers guided tours to school groups throughout the year. You will be assigned a section, and we will work with you to create a “script” to follow. Most groups come in around spring (April/May) and fall (September/October) and are often scheduled for mornings. Remember, nobody knows everything (even when they say they do!). If you get asked a question you don’t know, it’s ok to say so. Seasonal, as needed.
Saddle-cleaning/oiling
We have a collection of leather tack that needs to be cleaned and oiled to help preserve it. We will teach you the process and provide the products.
File Organization
Do you enjoy having a place for everything and everything in its place? The museum has a large collection of files and photographs that need to be sorted and organized. We will provide instructions and supplies.
Miscellaneous
These jobs change often depending on what needs to be done. We are currently looking for help with the following:
Living History Day

- Demonstrator Assistance: We will need volunteers to assist our demonstrators by running errands: getting more supplies, keeping the tables clean and organized, keeping track of hands-on items, watching the station if they need a break, and guiding visitors through the stations.
- Building Docents: We will need volunteers stationed in the main museum building and in our outbuildings to greet visitors, answer questions, and keep an eye on things. Depending on where you're stationed, we may also teach you how to demonstrate certain items.
- Outdoor Cleaning: We need all of our outbuildings swept/shop vacuumed, dusted, and de-cobwebbed. Debris tends to collect against the fences around the yard, so some raking may need to be done as well.
